Turkey has a history of deadly prison hunger strikes. A hunger strike that began in 2000 claimed the lives of 122 people, and hundreds more were permanently crippled. Another 30 prisoners and two prison guards were killed when security forces stormed jails to end the hunger strike.

BRUSSELS, Belgium, – Belgian police attacked Kurdish demonstrators who have been peacefully protesting against Turkish government trying to take attention of EU Parliament to the huge hunger strike in Turkey prisons.
The hunger strike is in 48th day and at the very critical death level. At the result of the attack, two very well known Kurdish journalists Erdal Er and Ferda Cetin got under surveillance by the police. In support of hunger strike initiated by the members of PKK and PAJK that were launched by more than 700 Kurdish political prisoners in the Turkish prisons, a sit-in action started in front of the European Parliament on 1 pm.
The demonstration has been going on by further participants of the Kurds and friends of the Kurds. MEHABAD, — The Supreme Council of the Islamic Republic of Iran has confirmed death sentences for two Kurdish political activists who had launched an appeal to their verdicts. Mukrian News Agency has quoted the lawyer of two Kurdish political activists, as saying that their death sentences have been confirmed by the Supreme Council. Eli and Hebib Efshari from Mehabad city had been sentenced to death on the charge of Moharebe, “enmity with God”, by Revolution Court in Mehabad, for their alleged affiliation with one of the Kurdish political groups.
Eli and Hebib Efshari were arrested in October 2010 by the Security Forces and are currently held in Urmiye Central Prison. According to the latest information at least 30 Kurdish political activists are currently sentenced to death by the Iranian Revolution Courts awaiting their executions.

NEWSDESK, — Most of the Kurdish hunger strikers in Turkey’s prisons are entering 48th day of their fasting. Some of them are reported to be at the brink of death.
Turkish government have not met demands made by the hunger strikers which includes the end of isolation to Kurdish national leader Abdullah Ocalan and the use of Kurdish language in defence trial as well as in the public. The hunger strikers have announced they will continue their campaign unless the Turkish government meets their demands which even according to Amnesty International and Human Rights Organisation in Amed are legitimate and the most basic ones.
Despite the critical health conditions the hunger strikers have turned down offers for medical service provided by the prison clinics. Among the hunger strikers are two Kurdish deputies from Peace and Democracy Party (BDP), several Kurdish mayors, and numbers of Kurdish journalists.
Turkish government has not taken a single measure to meet the hunger strikers demands, report said, and instead it has in some instances threatened them.
In response to the threats of Turkish government the hunger strikers have raised the slogan of “The Struggle is the Life”, a motto that was coined in Amed prison in the 1980s which has guided the Kurdish resistance against colonialism ever since then.

Demonstrations have been running throughout Kurdistan as well as in some European countries to support the hunger strikers in Turkey’s prisons. Thousands of PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party) and PAJK (Kurdistan Free Women Party) have been on hunger strike for the last 49 days. Some of them are reported to be at critical condition.
Demonstrations broke out today in Amed, which were responded disproportionally by Turkish police. Tear gases were shot from helicopters over the demonstrators.
According to the local sources the demonstrators were making their way toward Amed E Prison but they were hindered by police forces in Emek Street. Turkish police attacked the demonstrators firing tear gases in an effort to disperse the population. A tear gas bomb hid a house which burst it into flame immediately. Fire fighters were sent to distinguish the fire.
In the meantime tear gas was shot from helicopters hovering over demonstrators who were also attacked from the ground by water cannons. Clashes between the demonstrators and the police forces are currently underway in Nukhet Coshgun, and military armoured vehicles set on the cities.

30.10.2012, HAKKARI (DIHA) - Police officers interfered to the march made in Yuksekova to support the indefinite and non-alternate hunger strikes. Also, in Kiziltepe police interfered to the march and assaulted on the citizens. Thousands of people came together in 3 different points and marched towards Newroz Square in Nusaybin district of Mardin. After a short while, police officers assaulted on them with tear gases and gas bombs.

30 October 2012, Kurdish Communities of Washington DC staged a demonstration in front of the White House two days ago to call Washington government’s attention to the ongoing indefinite and irreversible hunger strike by Kurdish political prisoners in Turkey prisons.
The press release by Kurdish Communities of Washington pointed out that “the war and repression against the Kurdish population in Turkey, but also the growing resistance against the inhuman policies of the AKP government, have reached a level which has shown the urgency of a political resolution to the Kurdish question stronger than ever before”.
The press release remarked that the silence of media continues at the critical stage in prisoners’ irreversible action and that the Turkish government refused to act upon these basic demands in violation of international conventions to which Turkey is a signatory.
It also reminded of the concerns Amnesty International and other human rights organizations have raised about Turkey’s past record of violating human rights and oppression of its Kurdish minority. The press release underlined that “Kurdish Americans are supporting the demands have been raised by the prisoners on hunger strike, as well as the people of all four regions of Kurdistan and by the human rights defenders” .

Turkish police attacked Peace Mothers and Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) members who gathered at Ok Meydanı (Ok Square) in Istanbul on Tuesday in solidarity with Kurdish political prisoners on hunger strike.
Clashes broke out in the area as a group of BDP members were attacked with tear gas and pressure water when they wanted to march to AKP Istanbul provincial headquarters to protest against government’s taking no steps concerning the demands of strikers.
Police also attacked the tent of mothers who have been on a hunger strike in Sibel Yalçın Park at Ok Meydanı for the last three days. Many women felt sick and many others fainted after the tear gas attack in the tent.
BDP Istanbul deputies Sebahat Tuncel and Sırrı Süreyya Önder, ESP Leader Figen Yüksekdağ, EMEP Leader Selma Gürkan, BDP provincial executives and many other politicians marched to the Park after the attack. Deputies and party leaders are expected to make a public statement here.

European Parliament member Mikael Gustafsson from Swedish Left Party called on the Turkish government to immediately fulfill the demands of strikers, release them and to start negotiations for a solution to the Kurdish question.
Reminding that the strike of prisoners is also supported by women, deputies, human rights defenders, unionists and journalists outside prisons, Gustafsson evaluated the fast as "one of the numerous negotiation and dialogue attempts Kurdish people have made to demand an end to their being oppressed, jailed and murdered since the establishment of the Turkish Republic”.
Gustafsson continued saying that; "The current health condition of Kurdish prisoners, whose act is a consequence of the retrogress in Turkey’s political development, is a highly worrisome development. Turkey’s attempt to reduce the Kurdish people to silence and to eliminate their right to political organization is a major blow to democracy."
Gustafsson also criticized the European Union, which has most recently been awarded the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize for contributing to negotiation and peace for 60 years, for not taking action concerning the hunger strike and initiation of negotiations for a solution to the Kurdish question.
Gustafsson ended demanding the immediate fulfillment of prisoners’ demands, recognition of the right to education and self-defence in mother language and release of all political prisoners.

According to the National Conference government headed by Farooq Abdullah the official figure of disappeared persons stood at 3,184. The then People’s Democratic Party government headed by Mufti Sayeed informed the assembly in February 2003 that 3,744 persons went missing between 2000 and 2002. According to the Srinagar-based Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP) which has rendered yeoman service all these years, at least 8,000 persons have disappeared since 1989.
Punjab witnessed a similar pattern of abuse and cover-up during the counter-insurgency operations from 1984 to 1995. An inquiry by the police investigation team of the Jammu and Kashmir State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has found 2,730 bodies dumped into unmarked graves in four districts.

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) -- A frustrated UN investigator on Palestinian human rights urged a boycott of companies tied to Jewish settlements on occupied Palestinian land on Thursday, while the United States criticized the call as "irresponsible and unacceptable."
Richard Falk, the independent special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian Territories, said the companies - which include Hewlett Packard, Motorola, Volvo and Caterpillar - should be boycotted until they adhered to international rights standards and practices.
"The focus on business activities is partly an expression of frustration about the inability to obtain compliance with these fundamental legal obligations of Israel and the ineffectiveness of the UN efforts to condemn settlement expansion," Falk, told a news conference.
"There have been calls on Israel for literally decades to stop building the settlements," he said. "The effort to reach out beyond the traditional way that the UN condemns things is an effort to take our role seriously enough to feel that we should try to use what influence we have to change behavior."
There have been more than two decades of efforts to negotiate the creation of a Palestinian state. "The whole issue of Palestinian self-determination is at risk here," Falk said. "I would connect closely this effort to give concreteness to our concern by holding businesses that do profitable activities (in the West Bank) responsible with these fundamental issues of self-determination."
Falk lists 13 companies in his report to the UN General Assembly, but notes that this is a small portion of the businesses operating or dealing in the Jewish settlements. Aside from the boycott, Falk also urged civil society to pursue legal and political redress against companies "especially where allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity can be substantiated in relation to settlement activities."
Falk was appointed by the Geneva-based Human Rights Council to his position in 2008, but Israel has barred him from entering the country or occupied Palestinian territories under its control.

Mark Hertling commander of U.S. forces answered questions from journalists. Hertling said US sent troops to Turkey after recent developments, explaining the soldiers sent to Turkey are there "to share intelligence." Hertling said "helicopters, trucks as well as elements of logistics support can be used for evacuation operations as Turkey has to deal with the approaching winter and concerns about the humanitarian crisis on the border."

US institute honours genocide-accused SLA’s Demining Unit
21 October 2012, The Marshall Legacy Institute (MLI), an American non-profit organization based in Virginia, has honoured a ‘Humanitarian Demining Unit’ team of the genocide-accused SLA as the best Mine Detection Dog team for the year 2012 at its annual “Clearing the Path” event, at Washington on October 10.
Eezham Tamil activists, however, criticized the move as a legitimization of the structural genocide occurring in the occupied Tamil homeland in which SLA’s demining unit also plays a part.
SLA’s demining unit has played an important role in systematically erasing all traces of war crimes in the Tamil homeland like cluster bombs and chemical weapons, which bear witness to the genocidal offensives carried out by the Sri Lankan military on the Eezham Tamil people.
Eezham Tamil activists also allege that this unit has worked in collaboration with the SLA in facilitating the smooth functioning of the "High Security Zones", and also in the process of "identifying zones" where the uprooted Tamils can be resettled and where they can be monitored.
The MLI honoured SLA sapper DKN Rohan and Mine Detection Dog Spartacus as the “Mine Detection Dog team of the year”.

Despite this, just a few months later, the foreign secretary, William Hague, met Iran's foreign minister and sought "deeper co-operation" between the two countries on counter-narcotics. This illustrates the systemic contradictions at the heart of the west's approach in dealing with Iran and the wider "global war on drugs".
When the head of the UNODC visited Iran in July, he concluded his trip by praising Iran's counter-narcotics strategy as "one of the world's strongest" and called on the international community to assist Iran in its fight. While he was visiting, several more people were executed on drugs charges.
