One group of countries sympathetic to Syria’s opposition is planning to hold another “Friends of Syria” meeting, but there was little prospect of that resulting in action against Assad. “I just expect ideas to be presented. There will be no concrete plans,” Arab League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby told Reuters at the conference in New York.

The rebels also threatened to confront locally-based Kurdish militant groups who they said they suspected of supporting Assad. They said the groups were linked to Kurdish Worker’s Party (PKK) which has been fighting for autonomy in neighboring Turkey. One rebel leader issued a warning to the Kurds through the Facebook page for the Tawheed Brigade, the largest rebel unit in Aleppo. “Tawheed Brigade leader Abdelqadir al-Saleh made a final request by phone to the PKK gangs, to drop their weapons immediately and not drag themselves into a losing battle that is not their fight,” it said. “Whoever carries arms in the face of the opposition battalions will find themselves under fire.”

Outsourced Palestinian land to Turkish firm

In a Palestinian Authority (PA) administrative courthouse, in the far north of the occupied West Bank, one family has taken on the authority’s intention to build an industrial zone on their farmland in Jalameh, a village just outside Jenin. However, according to Daoud Darawi, the family’s lawyer, their case actually represents many more families, and perhaps has implications beyond the area of Jenin.
The concession agreement between Turkish foreign developers and the PA’s Palestinian Industrial Estate and Free Zone Authority, leaked exclusively to The Electronic Intifada, reveals that the industrial zone in Jenin will come under the full control of the foreign power funding the project.
If the plan goes forward, this agreement may well set a dangerous precedent for predatory industrialists and multinational companies in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. The land in question lies in the Marj Ibn Amer Valley, and is valuable for two — seemingly conflicting — reasons: its strategic positioning for export trade and its fruitful fertility.
If converted to industrial use, it will be lost to agriculture forever. Like many Palestinians, farmers in the Marj Ibn Amer Valley have lost their land before — but until now, it has always been to Israel.
Now intentions are to use land to create an industrial zone beyond the reach of Palestinian law and on which no Palestinian will have a right to set foot without the permission of the foreign corporation controlling it.

Of the top 10 cities with the most casualties, 6 were Kurdish cities in the southeast region. For many, this report confirmed the widely believed speculation that TSK sends Kurdish soldiers first to the front lines to combat Kurdish guerrillas.
Alongside the soldiers and villagers were several members of the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP). One parliamentarian who was present, Esat Canan, stated at the funeral: "We lose half of our children in the military, and half in the mountains."
Rather than working towards a peaceful solution to the country's most long-standing problem, the Turkish government's weapon of choice in dealing with the Kurdish issue has always been pitting Kurd against Kurd in violence. This is accomplished through forced recruitment of state-sponsored paramilitaries - village guards - and compulsory military service.
In the 1990's, when fighting between the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Turkish state reached its peak, Zerender was among thousands of Kurdish villagers who were forced to choose between joining the state's village guard system or refusing and being seen as a "PKK sympathizer" by the government.
To avoid the fate that befell those who refused service, forced expulsion and burning of his village, Zerender joined the state-sponsored militia.
This is the dilemma that Kurds in Turkey are faced with: cooperate with the state and be treated as a traitor in your community, or refuse and risk losing your home, or worse.
Very often, those Kurdish families who are forced to become village guards have children who have joined the armed struggle in the mountains. In those cases, the state literally sets brother against brother, father against son.

UN complicit in Mu'l'livaaykaal killings, say UN humanitarian workers
TamilNet, 24 September 2012, A report filed by an independent researcher based on eye-witness accounts from twelve United Nations humanitarian workers during the last phases of war ending in May 2009 on the policies implemented by Colombo, leading to starvation, deprivation of medical supplies, indiscriminate bombings of hospitals and schools in violation of UN Security Council resolution 1612, amounting to war-crimes and crimes against humanity, accuses the United Nation's officials' inaction, failure to speak out and willingness to acquiesce with the Rajapakse government's rights violations and state sanctioned killings of tens of thousands of unarmed civilians.
Professor Boyle commented that Tamils should push for a UN independent commission similar to that which produced the hardhitting UN Rwanda report, and to avoid Srebrenica type report which was an inside UN job and hence was a coverup.
Report on UN complicity in Sri Lanka HR violations UN Security Council Resolution 1612 Julian Vigo, a volunteer working in Haiti after the earthquake in January 2010, and who wrote the report says she was chosen as she was "not politically or economically tied to any one organization in Haiti where the report was written. Also Vigo has not worked in Sri Lanka.
Vigo interviewed eleven humanitarian workers who were posted with various agencies within the United Nations and one Internews staff member. Some of the twelve witnesses "resigned their posts, stating they could not ethically continue working in a capacity which was creating civilian deaths," the report adds, identifying some witnesses by names.
Vigo also points out that the UN Panel of Experts report failed to include the written 'exit' reports of staff which contained "crucial ethical violations of its [UN's] own offices."
While highlighting Colombo's policy that was intended to eliminate the LTTE without regard to the high civilian killings, where the narrative appears to provide incriminating evidence of Colombo perpetrating "acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, the report also points to UN Officials criminal responsibility in breaching their duty to act.
Professor Boyle commenting on Vigo's report said, "we already have several stories on Tamilnet where I condemn UN Complicity with GOSL genocide against the Tamils. This is just further confirmation of it."
"You [Tamils] could try to pressure the UN Secretary General to appoint an Independent Commission to Investigate the Role of the UN during the Vanni Massacre. That would probably require a member of the US Congress to introduce legislation to that effect and threatening to withhold the US share of UN dues if the SG does not. This is how reports were produced on the UN role in the Srebrenica genocide and the Rwanda Genocide."

Members of the Sri Lankan government partially made up these 1612 committees; hence members of the government would investigate its very own structure.
"Equally problematic, these committees which examine the 1612 violations were appointed on the basis of dialogue between the United Nations and the local government, a process for which there was absolutely no transparence."
One UNICEF Protection Officer discusses how UNHCR was aware that the Sri Lankan army engaged in human rights atrocities in violation of the Security Resolution 1612 as villages were destroyed and schools and hospitals attacked.
Natalie Grove, a former UNICEF Child Protection Officer who worked in Sri Lanka in the last months of the conflict, documented 11 separate incidents of attacks on or near hospitals and medical facilities in the Vanni between 15 December, 2008 through 15 January, 2009. Grove also drafted a briefing note entitled “Humanitarian Situation in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu Districts: Newly Arrived IDPs in Mannar, Vavuniya and Jaffna” (3 April 2009) which documents 1612 Violations.
In this briefing, there are 27 incidents reported to UNICEF of these violations which range from illegal shelling most of which point to the Sri Lankan Army as the perpetrator. There were also reports of violations allegedly committed by the LTTE (The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam), but no allegations have been verified.
"The consensus from every single informant with whom I spoke to on this subject is that many of the 20,000 dead in the final months was due to the failure in the system of the Resolution 1612 reports and their followup."
"There was a moral bankruptcy, according to every informant, of UNICEF’s and UNHCR’s role in keeping information of the atrocities marginalised and silenced while conterminously appeasing the Sri Lankan government."
"One UNICEF officer told me of a study made on malnutrition in Sri Lanka; however this study was stopped midway through, according to this informant, because the study demonstrated that malnutrition increased rather than decreased after the UNHCR presence."
James Elder told The Australian newspaper, “The nutritional situation of children [in the camps] is a huge concern for UNICEF, and restrictions on access hinder our ability to save lives.”
Elder’s comments do match the realities presented by these other UN workers whose experiences narrate how these UN agencies acted in complicity —albeit it a passive complicity—with the abuses of the Sri Lankan government.
The report, in conclusion says:
According to all twelve informants here, the key players within UN agencies have not suffered any repercussions for the delinquency of their professional duties towards the mission of their respective agencies. The top senior level players to whom they refer in Sri Lanka are namely Philippe Duamelle, Amin Awad, Neil Buhne and Andy Brooks. Each of these men has either been shifted in duty station or given a significant promotion with absolutely no inquiry into the repeated End of Mission reports which do clearly put these men’s actions and ethics into question.

The Sinhala military is quick to announce on Sunday, “There will be no more IDPs in the country from today.” On Friday, the camp inmates, having lost all confidence in Colombo government, have directly appealed for International intervention to enable them to return to their homes.

When the people insisted that they want their village and cultivation lands back, the Sinhala military commander started shouting in his language that either willing or not, all people would be removed from the camp before Monday. Speaking to TamilNet on Saturday, the TNPF leader Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam blamed the International Community for the current plight of Eezham Tamils.

TamilNet, 20 September 2012, Despite reports of alleged deployment of unscrupulous foreign expertise in erasing the traces of the genocidal onslaught that took place in Mullaiththeevu district in the final days of Vanni war in 2009, there are still remains of hundreds of human skeletons that were burnt to ashes in Aananthapuram and other parts of Puthukkudiyiruppu, civilians who have been allowed to resettle there told TamilNet this week.
Their observations confirm earlier information from reliable sources inside the SL military that thousands of non-combatants were taken to the suburbs of Puthukkudiyiruppu and shot and killed en masse with a clear intention to annihilate a large section of the people including children and women.
The findings by the resettling people confirm that a large number of those who were slain have been burnt to ashes.
While the international mechanism obviously falters in investigating the genocide abetted by the International Community of Establishments (ICE), the task of reporting even the tip-of-the-iceberg traces is ultimately left to the victims, human rights workers in the island commented.
Meanwhile, reliable sources inside the SL military told TamilNet earlier that the SL military had photographed in a systematic way every one of the victims at different angles, before and after their killing.
The SL military not only keeps the photographs of those who were massacred, but it also has a clear count on their victims of genocide, the sources further said.
The resettling people express fear that they feel like living in a ghost village marred with dumped bodies in abandoned bunkers and burnt remains of skeletons along the walls of their houses and schools.

Plaid Cymru annual conference calls for release of Abdullah Ocalan
The Plaid Cymru annual conference, meeting on the weekend of 14th-15th September, has passed an emergency motion calling for the immediate release of Abdullah Ocalan, an end to Turkish military operations and the resumption of peace talks between Turkey and the Kurds.
A leading British political party has formally adopted a clear motion demanding for the release of Abdullah Ocalan and his involvement in peace talks.
The motion, drawn up in cooperation with the Peace in Kurdistan campaign, was moved by MP Hywel Williams and received overwhelming backing from the conference delegates.
Plaid Cymru representatives in Cardiff, Westminster and Brussels have lent their support to initiatives seeking to raise the Kurdish issue and have taken part in delegations to Kurdistan on numerous occasions. Peace in Kurdistan along with Kurdish diplomatic representatives from the Kurdistan National Congress, KNK, have lobbied Plaid Cymru and attended its conferences over many years developing close relations with the party which has ensured that Plaid members have been kept well informed of developments in Turkey and Kurdistan.
This year’s conference held in the town of Brecon in mid-Wales was attended by AKif Wan, KNK representative, accompanied by David Morgan from Peace in Kurdistan, who were able to meet with senior party members including president Jill Evans MEP, former president Dafydd Iwan, Elfyn LLwyd MP, and the new party leader Leanne Wood.
The visit gave an opportunity to raise with Plaid Cymru the latest news on the mass show trials of journalists, lawyers in Turkey and the continued persecution of the pro-Kurdish BDP by the state. The party also has strong sympathies with the Kurdish struggle for national rights and self-determination given its own traditions and perspectives on the history of Wales and its relations with Westminster.

An analyst says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made the Palestinians disappear from the international stage with the “will he, won’t he” drama of threatening to bomb Iran. In an article on The Guardian website, Chris McGreal said Netanyahu’s bid to draw “Washington’s energies into trying to prevent him from attacking Iran before the US election” has all but eliminated any talk of the illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories and Palestine’s move for statehood or recognition at the UN.
“When the Israeli prime minister was last in Washington, there was barely a mention of the Palestinians after his meeting with [US President Barack] Obama. And barely a word was breathed about the Palestinians at this year’s meeting of the most influential of the pro-Israel lobby groups in Washington, American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
The focus was firmly on Iran.” McGreal said Netanyahu’s recent appearance on Meet the Press this weekend was “telling” in that “there wasn’t a single mention of the Palestinians during the 15-minute interview.” “[Interviewer David] Gregory didn’t ask about them, and Netanyahu didn’t talk about them.
Thus the fate of several million people living under varying degrees of an occupation that continues to plunder land, maintain discriminatory laws and administrative procedures – such as rationing water to Arab villages while their neighbors in the Jewish settlements have unlimited supplies – remains in limbo.”

In addition to airstrikes and ground attacks, the Tel Aviv regime also denies about 1.7 million people in Gaza their basic rights, including the freedom of movement and the right to decent living, work, health and education.
Gaza has been blockaded since 2007, a situation that has caused a decline in the standard of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty.
