Turkish forces bomb PKK cemetery, while Recep Tayyip Erdogan meets Bashar Al-Assad and Khaled Mishaal

The roar of Turkish war planes taking off from the Amed (Diyarbakir) airport and heading south is becoming increasingly common with each passing day. Yesterday one of the many Turkish attacks on Iraqi Kurdistan targeted a cemetery in the Medya Defense Zone where a large number of fallen PKK fighters are buried. The attack caused significant damage to the cemetery, destroying many grave stones and disturbing the remains of a many fallen fighters. This attack on dead fighters has drawn much condemnation from Kurds in Kurdistan and abroad.

10:42 AM - Khaled Mishaal is to meet on Wednesday with visiting Turkish premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Damascus. Erdogan is to visit Syria for a few hours during which he would meet with Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad then with the Hamas leadership to discuss the deteriorating conditions in the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian military groups in the Gaza Strip continued to launch projectiles towards Israeli towns on Tuesday in retaliation for the Israeli air strikes.

Have meetings with responsible for your police forces, do some sort of inventory and do a recolonisation over your equipments and technicalities, calculate cooperation's and coordination's, and estimate what can be done to improve their safety in their work, in duty and off duty!

The Iraqi police forces and army are the heroes of Iraq and there have been a LOT of policemen giving their lives for Iraq. They shall have all credit and their own special day of honor, memorial, gratitude and salutes!

Britain's Royal United Services Institute has warned drought and high food prices have already created conditions for a "calamitous famine." "Afghanistan may be on the brink of a calamity which has the potential to undermine much of the progress which has been achieved there," the British think-tank says in a recent report.

"When temperatures plummet and snow cloaks the Hindu Kush, millions of desperate Afghans will look to the UN, ISAF [International Security Assistance Force] and their own government for help or survival. If the international community is found wanting, we can expect increased frustration and anger from a population which once saw the international intervention in Afghanistan as a source of hope." Twenty-six WFP food convoys have been attacked and supplies that could have fed up to 100,000 people for a month have been destroyed. More recently, the Taliban has been attacking supply convoys as they pass through the Pakistani city of Peshawar and the Khyber Pass. "WFP did experience an attack in the Peshawar area recently where 610 tonnes of food was lost," Ms. Nicol said. "Of course, this was a minor blow, as the loss of any food would be. However, since then the security situation on that route has improved."

Still, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says conditions are becoming increasingly difficult for foreign aid workers. "The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan has deteriorated, due to a combination of natural disasters, lack of government capacity to prepare and respond, as well as increased violence and military action that cause serious problems of access and raise concerns over the protection of civilians," a recent UN report said. More than 40% of Afghanistan is either permanently or temporarily inaccessible for humanitarian partners. Impoverished rural areas are more vulnerable than ever since a continued drought this summer cut the wheat harvest by 36%. Traditionally, up to 30% of Afghans are said to be "chronically food insecure," with the most vulnerable living in the central highlands and the extreme northeast and northwestern parts of the country. "Obviously the winter is an unknown factor in terms of how harsh it will be," Ms. Nicol said.

UNITED NATIONS – Key world powers trying to promote Mideast peace urged Israel and Hamas on Tuesday to immediately stop fighting in Gaza and southern Israel, the United Nations announced as international efforts to calm the conflict. The Quartet of Mideast peacemakers — the United States, United Nations, European Union and Russia — appealed "for an immediate cease-fire that would be fully respected," U.N. deputy spokeswoman Marie Okabe said.

The Quartet also "called on all parties to address the serious humanitarian and economic needs in Gaza and to take necessary measures to ensure the continuous provision of humanitarian supplies," Okabe said. "They agreed on the urgent need for Israelis and Palestinians to continue on the road to peace," she said. U.N. officials said Quartet members were following up individually with Israel and the other parties. Okabe said the Quartet's appeal was agreed on during a teleconference involving U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, whose country holds the EU presidency, and the group's Mideast envoy, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. But he added: "At the same time, it is important to keep the pressure up on Hamas, not give them a respite, time to regroup and reorganize."

According to internal Israeli assessments, the air offensive has destroyed a third of the Hamas rocket arsenal. "None of us can say how long it will take," Israeli President Shimon Peres said after being briefed at the Defence Ministry about Israel's deadliest campaign in the Gaza Strip since the 1967 Middle East war. "Any truce proposals, to be credible, must include guarantees about how it will be imposed on Hamas," an Israeli government said.

Medical officials put Palestinian casualties since Saturday at 383 dead and more than 800 wounded. "We are living in horror, we and our children. The situation is not just bad, it is tragic," said Gaza resident Abu Fares, standing outside his home, near the rubble of a building bombed overnight.

Court releases decision behind sentencing of Kurdish politician. A Turkish court which sentenced pro-Kurdish politician Leyla Zana to another 10 years in prison released its reasoned decision on the case yesterday. In its 60-page report, the Diyarbakır 5th Higher Criminal Court stated: "The defendant, who had been convicted before by the Ankara 11th Higher Criminal Court, has continued her actions. The defendant has gone on to spread propaganda on the organization's behalf nationally and internationally. In her speeches, the defendant has stated that she does not see the PKK as a terrorist organization and she openly shows moral support for the organization. The defendant has intensified her efforts," it said, adding that Zana had acted in line with the organization's goals in her national and international press statements and meetings. The court stated that its decision to punish Zana is in accordance with the Turkish Penal Code (TCK) and the fifth clause of Law No. 3713. Zana gained prominence in 1991 for taking part of her oath of office in Parliament in Kurdish. She was convicted in 1994 by a State Security Court (DGM) of links to the PKK, In 2004, she was released after an appeals court overturned her conviction.

As Turkey's first full-time Kurdish TV Channel, TRT-6, is about to be launched, bans remain on the use of letters in the Kurdish alphabet. In Diyarbakir, 12 parks were opened; all their original names were in Kurdish. They were then given to the municipality and the names were changed by the district governor.

In December 2007 and August 2008 Turkey and it´s court made efforts to ban the Democratic Society Party (DTP). In November, prosecutors launched a probe into the DTP party after it demanded autonomy for the Kurds living in the country's southeast. Also in November, Turkish prosecutors started legal action to ban the main Kurd political DTP party in Turkey. Television has said Demirtas was one of 183 people being tried on charges of using fake health reports in order to avoid military service, obligatory for all healthy Turkish men. Prosecutors were seeking a 2-5 year prison sentence for the DTP leader, who rejects the charge. Before August 2002, the Turkish government placed severe restrictions on the use of Kurdish language, prohibiting the language in education and broadcast media. Use of the Kurdish letters X, W, Q has led to judicial persecution in 2000 and 2003.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon demanded an immediate cease-fire in Gaza on Monday and urged Mideast and world leaders to do more to help end the Israeli-Hamas conflict and promote political dialogue. The West Bank Fatah movement accused Hamas of refusing to release 51 Fatah-affiliated prisoners held in the As-Saraya security compound, bombed by Israeli warplanes Sunday morning. Families of the prisoners killed in the bombing said “Hamas militants insisted on preventing prisoners from leaving the compound at gunpoint and even gathered all prisoners in one room to be an easy target.”

Fatah spokesperson Ahmad Abd Ar-Rahman called on Hamas to release all political prisoners immediately. He said held Hamas responsible for the death of dozens of Fatah activists detained at the Al-Mashtal and As-Saraya compounds, saying they should have been set free to find shelter and safety. Commenting on the incident at As-Saraya compound, Hamas spokesperson Fawzi Barhoum said that the International Red Cross informed the government that the compound would not be bombarded. He expressed sadness over the deaths of the prisoners, and noted that Hamas-affiliated wardens were also killed in the attack. Responding to Barhoum’s claims, the Ministry of Prisoners' Affairs contacted a spokesperson for the Red Cross, Iyad Nasr, who confirmed that the Red Cross did not tell Hamas that Israel was not planning to bombard As-Saraya.

He emphasized that the Red Cross exerted pressure on Hamas to release prisoners or provide shelter for them in another area, especially considering that all their prisoners were gathered in one room. Hamas did not respond to Red Cross pressure, Nasr said. Furthermore, the Red Cross contacted Israel asking them to avoid shelling As-Saraya. Hamas was informed of Israel’s position, the spokesperson claimed.

A Turkish parliament member's request Sunday that the legislature apologize to Armenians for the “events of 1915” has caused an uproar in parliament, with members hurling personal insults at one another. Democratic Society Party (DTP), brought the matter up during parliament's discussion of the education ministry budget and went on to recall the Armenian massacres by using the Kurdish word that describes Genocide.

Some likened the campaign to kill Armenians to the current campaign waged against the Kurdistan Workers Party-PKK.

Nevzad Pakdil, who was presiding over the parliament session, interrupted Euzcelik, blasting him for “insulting the society in which you live.” Euzcelik said that he was apologizing to Armenians on his own behalf. Pakdil intervened again attempting to stifle the parliament member. Members of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) applauded the Pakdil while another DTP member, Surru Saken (Sirri Sakik) directed his anger to Paktdil by saying, “Mr. Chairman, you represent the Marash district and you know full well the extent of the tragedy that unfolded there.”

This comment prompted a member of the AKP to walk toward DTP members and begin screaming at his fellow parliamentarians. Another parliament member intervened to stop what could have become a physical altercation.

“Should we not talk about the facts? There is not one Assyrian left,” screamed another DTP member during the commotion, which was followed by several DTP members leaving the parliament. The unprecedented demonstration in Parliament came less one a week after 200 Turkish intellectuals launched an internet petition apologizing to the Armenians for what they called the "injustice" of the "Great Catastrophe" of 1915. The petition, which sparked controversy in Turkey, had garnered over 20,000 signatures by Monday, stirring a media storm on the topic and challenging long-held taboos on the Armenian Genocide. It has drawn the ire of Turkey's ultra nationalists, provoking also Turkey's powerful generals, former diplomats, the Foreign Minister, and the Prime Minister to denounce the campaign.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced he will visit Iran and Turkey next week. Maliki will meet Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Turkey before leaving for Iran.

Backed by US intelligence, Turkey has regularly launched military attacks along the border with the autonomous region targeting PKK , a militant group which has been fighting for a separate homeland in the region for 30 years. Ihsan said local people in the Kurdish villages along the border had suffered serious damage and many had been forced to flee their homes for refugee camps in more secure areas.

Since 1984 the Turkey's Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) took up arms for self-rule in the mainly Kurdish southeast of Turkey (Turkey-Kurdistan). A large Turkey's Kurdish community openly sympathise with PKK. Turkey refuses to recognize its Kurdish population as a distinct minority. The PKK demanded Turkey's recognition of the Kurds' identity in its constitution and of their language as a native language along with Turkish in the country's Kurdish areas, the party also demanded an end to ethnic discrimination in Turkish laws and constitution against Kurds, ranting them full political freedoms.

The PKK is considered a 'terrorist' organization by Ankara, U.S., the PKK continues to be on the blacklist list in EU despite court ruling which overturned a decision to place PKK and its political wing on the European Union's terror list.

Turkey refuses to recognize its Kurdish population as a distinct minority. It has allowed some cultural rights such as limited broadcasts in the Kurdish language and private Kurdish language courses with the prodding of the European Union, but Kurdish politicians say the measures fall short of their expectations. Turkey has never, and still does not, recognize the Kurdistan Region Government KRG and have refused to meet with its representatives in any official capacity. Iraqi Kurdistan politicians say, Turkey is using PKK as an excuse to invade Kurdistan region 'Iraq' to prevent the establishment of Kurdistan state in the Kurdish autonomous region in 'northern Iraq'.
