Security and judicial authorities in Turkey and Iran have had the same function the same way during decades and are a crime in themselves.

Naseer Elizadeh, who was detained in Selmas two weeks ago, died of his wounds in Selmas hospital on 16 September. Reporter Yasemin Dobra-Manco wrote a lengthy two-part article after speaking with Barry Jacobs, the assistant director of the American Jewish Committee and Daniel Mariaschin, the director of the B'nai B'rith International Center for Public Policy.
Several Jewish-American groups have been lobbying in favour of Turkey and Azerbaijan for some time, the remarks made by Jacobs and Mariaschin come close to a declaration of lobbying war against the interests of Armenia and Karabagh.
Mariaschin told the Turkish Daily News that there are a number of Jewish-American groups that have "U.S-Turkish and Turkish- Israeli relations high on their agenda." The article lists the following organisations as playing "an increasingly active role in the advocacy of Turkish positions on many issues in the United States: The American Jewish Committee, the American Jewish Congress, the Anti-Defamation League, B'nai B'rith, the Conference of Presidents of Major Ameri-can Jewish Organisations, and the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs."
Both Jacobs and Mariaschin travelled to Istanbul and Ankara to explain "the unique role" their "organisations can play in the lobbying process in the United States." Even though Jacobs and a Jewish-American delegation also visited Armenia and Karabagh, in addition to Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey, we are not fooled by their show of seeming even-handedness. They had made a firm decision to support the Turks and the Azeris long before their "fact-finding" trip.
Mariaschin discloses that "Jewish groups are now addressing an expanded agenda of issues," including support for the Baku- Ceyhan pipeline.
In Part II of the article, Jacobs pledges that Jewish organisations will "take an active and vigorous role in being friends of Turkey in the United States.... We will champion to the best of our ability Turkish interests in the U.S. Congress. We will be Turkey's friends officially in Congress" and work to help get favourable legislation passed.
Jacobs gives as an example the criticism that Jewish groups received following the placement of an ad in the New York Times and the International Herald Tribune to congratulate the Turkish Republic's 75th anniversary. Jacobs admits that many Jews who are members of his group questioned, "why are we supporting Turkey which has a terrible human rights record?"
In trying to minimise the failure of the Jewish groups to lift the ban on aid to Azerbaijan, he calls Section 907 "largely symbolic." He then contradicts himself by disclosing that because of Section 907, Israel's Overseas Development Program cannot send Israeli technicians to Azerbaijan, since the Program receives funds from the U.S. government.
Jacobs states that "it is unfair to single out Azerbaijan, a pro-western and pro-NATO country that has diplomatic relations with Israel." Jacobs says that Armenian forces with the backing of Russia, occupy 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory and have created 1 million in internally displaced persons. Therefore, he explained, the organised American-Jewish community has come to the conclusion that it is wrong to further victimise Azerbaijan."
Ignoring the fact that Turkey has hired the best U.S. lobbying firms that money can buy, Jacobs says that the Turkish lobby in the United States is "very small, unorganised and almost non-existent, while Turks in general failed to under-stand the modern lobbying process." His implied message is: Ignorant and badly organised Turks desperately need Jewish help."
Jacobs also conveniently fails to mention that the entire U.S. government, including the White House, the State and Defence departments, has acted as a giant Turkish lobby for the past 50 years.

He said Turkey will not join the EU unless a democratic solution for the Kurdish question is found. Ahtisaari insisted that Turkey's dynamics for a negotiation process shows great potential.
He also said that Turkish state must negotiate Kurdish leader Ocalan and Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) for a solution to the Kurdish Question. The Open Society Association said the aim of Ahtisaari's visit is to prepare a report about the situation in the region. Ahtisaari will visit Turkish president Abdullah Gül, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and foreign minister Ahmed Davudoglu today.

Turkish court sentences president of BDP to 10-month imprisonment. Demirtas tried for 'disseminating propaganda'
28 September 2010, Diyarbakir Heavy Criminal Court Nr.5 sentenced co-chair of pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Selhattin Demirtas to 10-month imprisonment on account of "disseminating propaganda for the Kurdistan Workers' Party". The punishment came in a period while dialog and peace demands are raising and the government officials started meeting BDP.
The case was launched because of Selahhating Demirtas speech on Kurdish satellite channel in which he was criticising the state officials for the prison conditions of the imprisoned leader of Abdullah Ocalan. Demirtas was the president of the Diyarbakir Branch of Human Rights Association in Turkey (IHD) at the time.
While the hearing was held in Selahhatin Demirtas's absence his lawyer Meral Danis stated that the said speech falls within the scope of the freedom of expression. However, the court considered the press release organised by the Diyarbakir Democracy Platfrom for the same topic and Selhattin Demirtas who read out the statement, as the platform spokesperson and sentenced him to one-year imprisonment. The court then reduced the imprisonment to 10-month. As a result of the punishment Selahattin Demirtas will be observed whether he commits the same crime.
While he was still the chair of IHD Diyarbakir office before he was elected to parliament in 2007 Demirtas was also punished for "praising crime and criminal" a year and 6 month imprisonment over a speech he made on Roj TV through telephone. However, the court of appeals over ruled the punishment and send the case back to the local court in order to be handled within the scope of the anti-terror law rather than penal code. After Demirtas was elected to the parliament the process continued despite the parliamentary immunity on account of being charged for terror crimes.

ICJ blames Colombo for world's largest detention, cautions donors against complicity
TamilNet, Monday, 27 September 2010, The International Commission of Jurists in a latest report has urged the International Community and the United Nations to extend 'rehabilitation' donor support only on condition of compliance with international law and standards, given the current legal vacuum and uncertain conditions under which at least 8,000 ‘surrendees’ are being detained by Colombo.
Otherwise, those who provide support to Colombo's detention programme risk complicity in a policy of systematic mass arbitrary detention, the ICJ warned, in an in-depth report titled "Beyond Lawful Constraints: Sri Lanka’s Mass Detention of LTTE Suspects".
In the report, the ICJ has characterised the detention as the largest mass administrative detention anywhere in the world. "The mass detention has the character of collective punishment, which is prohibited in any circumstances under international law," the report said.
While the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, in his address to the UN General Assembly on Thursday was demanding 'changes' in International Humanitarian Law that govern the conduct of war, the ICJ issued its 40-page report where it stated: "However, in the situation obtaining in Sri Lanka, where hostilities in the non-international armed conflict have ceased for more than one year, international human rights law is in any case the relevant legal regime applied in respect of detention and the related rights to liberty, security, fair trial, the rights of women and children, and the prohibition against torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment guaranteed under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)."
* Beyond Lawful Constraints: Sri Lanka’s Mass Detention of LTTE Suspects
The Donors should condition their support to rehabilitation on the establishment of a legal framework that provides for due process and safeguards the internationally-recognized rights of detainees, especially children, and ensures a transparent process of ex-combatants’ rights, the ICJ report said.
The United Nations should continue to refrain from supporting Sri Lankan government activities within the camps until a legal framework has been put in place and the UN should prioritise advocacy for the establishment of a legal and policy framework for the rehabilitation and reintegration of individuals who took active part in hostilities, the in-depth report by the ICJ said.
"An authoritative, independent account of the number of detainees is not available. The Sri Lankan Government has not permitted systematic monitoring by an independent body. The screening process by which IDPs were triaged at reception centres, internment camps and other locations has lacked sufficient accountability or transparency," the report said.
Although the ICRC had access to the ‘surrendee’ camps until early July 2009, and was able to register close to 10,000 detainees by that time, there was no independent protection monitoring of the detainees in their places of detention through to July 2010.
During this period, transfers between the CGR-administered ‘surrendee’ camps and other places of detention appeared to be ongoing. The ICRC was denied full access, a key measure of the willingness of the Government to abide by international law and standards.
As of the end of July 2010, more than one year after the military defeat of the LTTE by the SLA, it was estimated that up to 8,000 adults were being held in at least a dozen centres for ‘rehabilitation’ on the basis of alleged links with the LTTE, according to the ICJ report.
At least 1300 others have been identified as “hard-core” LTTE and who have been designated by the Government of Sri Lanka to face criminal prosecution; of these approximately 700 are in a special detention centre in Omanthai, the ICJ report noted.
Statements by the Government regarding the number of detainees held have been inconsistent, the ICJ report observed.
In November 2009, the then Commissioner General for Rehabilitation (CGR) indicated that 10,992 ‘surrendees’ were under his custody. Several weeks later, the Sri Lankan Permanent Representative to the United Nations stated that 12,700 ‘former combatants’ had been identified amongst the IDPs. Informally, the previous CGR had spoken of a figure of 12,000 detainees, most recently on 2 February 2010. Yet in a later press interview, his successor quoted a figure of 10,732 individuals under his custody.
The ICJ, in its report has assessed the human rights impact of the mass detention regime, applying international human rights law as the relevant legal regime, particularly in respect of the right to liberty under article 9 of the International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and its Optional Protocol, both ratified by Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lankan Ministry of Human Rights and Disaster Management, supported by the international community, prepared a policy framework and action plan addressing the rehabilitation and reintegration of ex-combatants, but this has not been approved, the ICJ report said.
The ICJ has called on Sri Lankan government to end the state of emergency.
Approximately 3,000 detainees had been released in the past year.

There are also allegations of torture and enforced disappearance. KCK also urged UN to take measure against racist policies and practices which are clear violation of international law.
In its press release KCK greeted the school boycott campaign launched by the Kurdish Linguistic Rights Association in North Kurdistan [Turkey] between 20- 25 September. “The great success of the boycott campaign revealed the desire of the Kurdish children for mother tongue education all over Kurdistan” added KCK press release.
KCK statement followed: “It is a natural right for the children to receive education in their mother tongue which is also the most effective to secure the future of a nation. Therefore, the children cannot be deprived of the right to use mother tongue in every sphere of the life. Right to identity is a right enshrined by Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the other human rights instruments which make it one of the universally recognised human rights.”

KCK further stated that “the occupier Turkish state ruled by a monist mentality is imposing ‘one nation, one motherland, one flag, one language and one anthem’ approach on the Kurds. Killing Afghans for 9 years do looks like genocide to us..
At least 70 people and possibly many more were killed today in a pair of major NATO air strikes against what NATO are calling “insurgent” targets. Locals launched public protests in the wake of the attacks to complain over civilian deaths in the strikes.
NATO denied that any civilians had been killed in either while protesters said that most or all of the victims of the Laghman strike were actually innocent civilians. Taliban spokes people denied having any forces in the area as well, suggesting civilian deaths.
The other strike in Khost Province targeted people trying to cross the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. The identities of these people aren’t known either, but while NATO said they killed 42 “suspects” in the strike, the provincial police chief said NATO had actually killed as many as 200.
Since Gen. David Petraeus took over in Afghanistan the number of air strikes has been increasing, and so have the number of civilian deaths. Shortly before last week’s election NATO launched an air strike against a vehicle convoy which they assumed to be “insurgents” but which later turned out to be campaign workers, killing 10 and wounding a candidate for parliament.

Earlier this week the Justice Department revealed that the FBI had been using false claims of “counter-terror” operations to justify covert spying operations against antiwar groups in Pittsburgh and elsewhere across the country.
Then this morning FBI agents and SWAT teams started kicking doors in across Minneapolis, across Chicago, across the rest of America. The target: antiwar activists of various stripes, but particularly those likely to be involved in antiwar protests at the next Democratic National Convention.
It seems the era of “covert” FBI spying has come to an end, and not in the good way like you’d hope. Rather it seems to have moved with surprising alacrity from behind the shadows and become an overt program of intimidation and surveillance of what is left of America’s antiwar movement.
Though the Justice Department seemed quite fine with shrugging off photographing protesters and infiltrating organizations, it seems that kicking doors in nationwide is something else entirely, and with the same tired “counter-terror” excuse being used the questions about the increasingly shameless tactics will only grow.
