March 6, 2014, The House Foreign Affairs Committee approved on Wednesday a bill that would enhance US-Israel defence ties and waived US entrance visa for Israelis. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Congressman Ted Deutch initiated the bill as they are the top two members on the committee's Middle East subcommittee; they strongly supported the bill, which was unanimously approved.
The bill named Israel a "major strategic ally" of the United States. It included measures that would encourage enhanced cooperation such as missile development, energy and security. US weapons reserve stockpiled in Israel are to be expanded according to this bill.
The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) said this bill would "dramatically strengthen the relationship between the two allies as they work to confront new threats and challenges in the Middle East."
In addition, the bill recommended that Israel join the US visa waiver programme. However, several US Senators protested against Israel's strict treatment of US citizens from Middle Eastern backgrounds and called for putting more restrictions on Israelis entering the country.

Israeli teens tell PM they 'refuse to be cannon fodder'
10/03/2014, (Ma'an) -- Dozens of Israeli teens on Saturday sent a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressing their moral objection to the Israeli army's actions and their intention to refuse enlistment, Israeli media reported.
The Israeli news site Ynet reported that in the letter the teens condemned the army's "war crimes according to international law," citing "executions without trial ... administrative arrests, torture, (and) collective punishments."
"Following our conscience, we cannot take part in a system that commits the aforementioned acts," the letter said.
The teens saw the army's actions as an obstacle to peace between Israelis and Palestinians, according to the report.
Mandy Kretner, one of the authors of the letter, said in a statement that "the army's actions distance us from finding a solution and reaching peace, justice and security." "The army serves the powerful people in society and not the citizens, who are only a tool," said another of the letter's signatories, Shaked Harari.
"Me and my friends refuse to be cannon fodder," Harari added.
Additionally, the teens decried the army's problematic impact on Israeli society, according to the Ynet report.
Mandatory army service leads "to racism and violence within society and to discrimination based on ethnicity, nationality and gender," the teens noted.

The KCK (Kurdistan Communities Union) Executive Council Co-presidency has issued a statement on the occasion of 8 March International Women's Day, saying: "Without women achieving their freedom the construction of a democratic nation cannot be realised, and without the building of a democratic nation women cannot live freely."
The KCK message saluted the resistance and struggle of women rebelling against the capitalist system, drawing attention to the women's revolution in West Kurdistan. "As this revolution spreads through the region and the world women and peoples will become free."
The KCK message continued: "We salute the women that celebrate International Women's Day every year on 8 March and demand equality, freedom and democracy. We greet with respect this honourable resistance of women rebelling against capitalism, the most brutal form of the system of male domination."
Undoubtedly, - KCK said- 8 March is not only a day that has been celebrated for over 100 years by the working women of the world. It is not right to categorise women as 'workers' or 'non-workers'. The value of women's labour cannot be measured in financial terms. Women are life and cannot have a price. Such theories have no meaning apart from providing a basis for the insidious exploitation of capitalism.
Remarking that capitalism has made women into cheap labour, turned them into a means of advertising, reduced them to the status of a home child-producer, in this way legitimising and intensifying the enslavement of women, KCK said the massacre of women in the middle ages, in the form of 'witch hunts' was transformed by capitalism into the exploitation of women in factories in the 1800s, destroying the very moral and political structure of society.
"The fundamental reason for the increasing violence against women is the anti-women policies of capitalism. This final form of patriarchy has made men enemies of women by legitimising male tyranny and violenc", the statement underlined.
"The Kurdish women's freedom movement has, with its long freedom struggle, made every day an 8th of March, a day of freedom and resistance. For 35 years it has carried out a women's revolution in the freedom line and leadership of the Saras and Zilans. Kurdish women have taken possession of the most precious values created by the world women's movement over hundreds of years, adding and crowning this struggle with a women's revolution.
The revolution advancing in Rojava is a magnificent women's revolution. It is a revolution based on the philosophy of a democratic nation, and expressing itself in a democratic autonomous system, a revolution in which all social groups can live freely and equally. As this revolution spreads through the region and the world women and peoples will become free.
Our freedom struggle, rising under the leadership of Kurdish women, takes as a basis our leader's philosophy, "a revolution that does not free women is not a revolution", and is waging a struggle for freedom and equality for all women, and realising the construction of a democratic nation with free women. In this context, the "For a Democratic Nation with Free Women" campaign launched by the women's freedom movement has great significance and adds historical value to this year's 8 March. Activists in Gaza march for International Women's Day
GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Activists from a number of women's organizations in the Gaza Strip took part in a rally on Saturday to mark International Women's Day. Protesters called upon the international community to end Israeli violations of Palestinian women's rights and to pressure Israel to lift the siege of the Gaza Strip, in a march that began at the Square of the Unknown Soldier and ended at the office of the United Nations.
Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine member Mariam Abu Diqa said that Palestinian women struggle for the freedom of their nation, the end of internal divisions between Palestinian political parties, and for full equality for women and men in both rights and duties.
Public relations coordinator for the Union of Health Work Committees Haneen Washah, meanwhile, called for international solidarity with Palestinian women, who she said "have a role in the struggle that cannot be ignored."
Washah also called upon the international community to stand with Palestinian female prisoners who are denied their rights in Israeli prison.
Amjad Shawa, coordinator of a network of NGOs in the Gaza Strip, said that Palestinian women suffer due to the continuation of the Israeli siege and the worsening rates of unemployment. He called for serious and effective intervention to end the tragedy facing the Gaza Strip's 1.5 million residents, who he highlighted were mostly women.
The march was originally scheduled to include approximately 80 women from a number of foreign countries, including the celebrated Algerian revolutionary Djamila Bouhired and Northern Irish Nobel Laureate Mairead Maguire. Egyptian authorities, however, prevented the solidarity delegation from reaching the Gaza Strip.
The Gaza Strip has been under a severe economic blockade imposed by the State of Israel with Egyptian support since 2006. The blockade was imposed following the victory of Hamas in the 2006 Palestinian elections and the subsequent 2007 clashes between Fatah and Hamas, which left Hamas in control of the Strip and Fatah in control of the West Bank.
The blockade has severely limited the imports and exports of the Gaza Strip and has led to frequent humanitarian crises and hardship for Gazans.
