DOCTORS have frequently been accomplices in politically motivated repression, brutality and genocide, conducting inhumane experiments on victims, participating in torture and directing programs to exterminate the enemy. For no reason other than they had the power to do it at the time, they have beaten, tortured and killed victims. Systematic participation of doctors in state terrorism began with the Armenian genocide in Turkey in 1915. Medical personnel were directly involved in the killings, often participating in torture. Behaeddin Shakir and Mehmet Nazim established extermination squads staffed by criminals. Nazim, in one of the most misguided appointments in the history of medicine, was professor of legal (ethical) medicine at Istanbul Medical School. Mehmed Resid was involved in the "deportation" of 120,000 Armenians. Resid's brutality included nailing red-hot horseshoes on the victim's chest, and crucifying them on makeshift crosses.
The Armenian genocide provided the template for the Nazi holocaust, leading to the most notorious example of medical complicity in state abuse: Nazi doctors who participated in euthanasia and genocide, of whom the most well known is Josef Mengele. Japanese medical abuses were as bad as those of the German doctors. The Imperial Army's Unit 731 conducted unspeakably cruel experiments on the people of Manchuria, infecting villages with anthrax, plague and cholera, performing live vivisection - cutting out the heart or brain from living victims, or burning them alive with jolts of electricity. Involvement of doctors in state repression and abuse has, if anything, escalated since 1945. The psychiatrist Radovan Karadzic, who led the Bosnian genocide (1992-95) in which more than 200,000 people died, used training in group therapy to formulate terror tactics and had his troops shell the hospital where he worked. Medical dictators running repressive regimes include: the former cruel ruler of Haiti Papa Doc Duvalier, the Malawi dictator Hastings Banda, Felix Houphouet-Boigny of the Ivory Coast, and Bashar al-Assad of Syria.

Iraqi government sources said the army's 12th Division has deployed thousands of troops in Kirkuk amid the rivalry between Kurds and ethnic Turks. The sources said the autonomous Kurdish government appealed to the U.S. military to halt the Iraq Army deployment in Kirkuk.The sources said the central government in Baghdad has sought to force Kurdish militias to withdraw from Kirkuk. MINGORA/TIMERGARA: Swat Taliban set free 30 captured security personnel in the presence of media representatives in Kotli Dadhara area of Kabal tehsil on Wednesday. Militants had earlier overrun a police post late on Tuesday night after a day-long siege in the Shamozai area bordering the Lower Dir district. The 30 security personnel stationed there were captured by the Taliban. The kidnapping of the personnel triggered heavy shelling from the military base camp in Kabal, Swat and Chakdara Fort, Dir. Four non-combatants were killed in the shelling in Asbanr, Lower Dir, and there were an unspecified number of casualties in Shamozai. The personnel taken hostage were released by the Taliban on Wednesday. ‘The hostages were freed on humanitarian grounds after an emergency meeting of the local Taliban Shura somewhere in Swat district,’ armed Taliban leaders told newsmen at the ceremony. Taliban leaders said the personnel were released on conditions that they would quit jobs forthwith and publish advertisements in the newspapers to that effect. They would not participate in any action against Taliban in future. The freed personnel included six policemen and 24 Frontier Constabulary men.

Separately, over 3,500 families have been registered in relief camps. Families who have migrated from the conflict-hit areas to Islamabad, Punjab and Sindh have not been included in the registration process.
Officials said the intensity of the conflict in Swat could trigger large-scale displacement from the district. According to unconfirmed reports, thousands of people were leaving those pockets where operation was in full swing. The head of the provincial disaster management authority, Jamil Amjad, said the social welfare department in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees had registered over 40,000 displaced families in eight districts who had been living with their relatives, friends or in rented buildings. He said the authority had accommodated 62,567 internally displaced people mostly from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas in 12 relief camps set up in Peshawar, Lower Dir, Nowshera and Mardan districts. In the Kacha Garhi camp, he said, the number of IDPs had reached 3,307 individuals. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) announced Friday it would be suspending its humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, pending further notice. UNRWA cited Hamas' seizing of some 200 tons of food from its warehouse in the Thursday as the reason.
The Gaza citizens have suffered enough because of Hamas v.s Fatah! We can not have UNRWA and aid workers dragged into this! Enough! Hamas just have to stand in line as every one else if they need aid! UNRWA and aid organizations have nothing to do with Hamas or Fatah! Maybe they want to do something useful instead of running around with weapons and masks..Then they should cooperate and coordinate instead.. Serious!

Kurds deprived from voting
More than 20 thousand Kurdish voters have been deprived from the privilege of electing their representatives in their areas known as disputed territories and high electoral commission is seen responsible for the deliberate mistake that will have influence on the Kurdish share in those areas. More than 20 thousand Kurdish individuals from the displaced families who have fled to Khanaqin from the insecure cities of Tikrit, Ba’aquba and other areas for their safety, have been prohibited from voting for allegedly having no food ration card that is used as a bases in the ballots.
The families held demonstrations on such a decision and called electoral commission to solve their case before it’s too late and miss their right to vote.“I appeal electoral commission to give me my right back to vote, I have the food ration card, so there is no reason behind such omission” said a demonstrator.“Why we do not have the right to vote in Khanaqin while I had once I was in Ba’aquba? I want to serve my country, I want my right back” asked a woman with a black Abaya. A politician, who asked not to be identified, said there were political reasons and ignorance from the electoral commission behind omitting 20 thousand names in the voting lists. “Certain people from the Arab Majority do not accept the ideas of seeing Kurds gaining vote on their lands, besides that there are also people who are inaccurate and ignorant.”
Kurdish alliance spokesman Salar Mahmud said hundreds of people took into the streets of Khanaqin and Makhmour on Saturday asking the electoral commission to return their rights, adding that their alliance was also making strong efforts to solve the problem.“The problems has still remained unsolved, but there are allegations that the commission has moved to solve it”Kurdish people in the disputed territories, except Kirkuk, take part in the provincial elections, since those areas are now run by the Iraqi government. Elections in Kirkuk postponed until the problems concerning the share of the ethnic groups in the local administration solved, as recommended in the provincial elections bill, article 23.

Solidarity and protests for Gilad Shalit
Dozens of people gathered outside Ehud Olmert's Jerusalem residence Friday morning and called on the prime minister to act during the remainder of his term to bring about the release of kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit. Speaking at an all-night solidarity event organized by students of Blich High School in Ramat Gan on Thursday, Shalit sought to not only emphasize the government's responsibility to see Gilad released but also issued an emphatic plea to his captors.
"I call on the leaders of Hamas, in Damascus and elsewhere, I say loud and clear what many Palestinians in Gaza dare not and cannot say out loud – stop holding us, the regular citizens, the uninvolved, the families of prisoners who could have been home by now – stop holding us as political hostages, as hostages of an imaginary resistance," he said.

Abbas asks EU to send peacekeepers to Middle East
Ma’an – Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday urged the European Union to send peacekeepers to the Middle East."The time has come for the international community to bear its legal, political and moral responsibilities and provide it with adequate international protection," Abbas told the European Parliament in Strasbourg. "I would like to stress again our request to send international forces in order to protect our people," he said. He also called on the EU to assist in future elections in the Palestinian Authority, and support any national unity government that may emerge in the future. "I hope you will help us organize such elections and oversee them," Abbas told European lawmakers. He also urged the international community to press Israel to open the Gaza Strip’s borders, and to prevent a repeat of Israel’s massive assault on the territory.

Ma'an - Israeli forces imposed a curfew on Thursday night in the northern West Bank town of Jayous, near Qalqiliya, according to witnesses. Four Palestinians were detained by Friday morning, sources said. Palestinians in the area told Ma’an Israeli vehicles raided the area, imposing a curfew via loudspeaker and confiscating keys to an area school. The town has hosted weekly demonstrations against the Israeli constructed separation barrier being built on confiscated land, but it was not immediately clear if the curfew is in response to the Friday protests usually taking place in the area.
(Ramattan) – The Israeli forces arrested on Thursday morning ten Palestinian citizens, including teens in different cities across the West Bank, Palestinian security sources said. The Israeli forces thrust into several villages in the city of Nablus and stormed several houses, arresting at least five citizens including three teens, the sources added. Another Israeli force raided into the city of Hebron and detained four citizens after storming their houses in the city. Earlier, the Israeli army seized the 14-year-old Shakir Hamamra in Bethlehem city and took him to undisclosed area, palestinian security sources stated. The Israeli army constantly launches search and arrest campaigns across the West Bank. There are more than 11.000 Palestinian detainees in the Israeli jails including children, women and law makers.
