Turkish journalist Cengiz Candar thinks that the current constitution (that dates back to a military coup) need to be changed to solve the Kurdish issue. He mentioned this during the EUTCC conference in Brussels. “Without a civil constitution there is not a way for a peaceful solution.” But only if there is the broadest understanding of citizenship in this constitution and a lift of al types of prohibitions Kurds face now.
Next to this there are other important steps. “Turkey is giving back the former Kurdish names of places. Candar is optimistic that it’s time for a democratic change in Turkey and agreed with the title of the conference: ‘Time for change in Turkey’. It’s time to change the world and to change rhetoric and to change all together. "Turkey will become an EU member and the solution of the Kurdish issue will be possible.”

ANKARA, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Twenty people were injured in a clash between supporters of PKK and members of an Islamist association in southern Turkey, Dogan News Agency reported Monday. The clash began late Sunday after Kurds attacked the building of the Islamist association with stones and Molotov cocktails in the southern Adana province, according to the report. Turkish police had detained seven suspects in connection with the incident, and beefed up security in the region, the report added.

BAGHDAD – Iraq's military clamped a vehicle ban Monday on the Sunni-dominated province of Anbar after tribal sheiks sent gunmen into the streets claiming Sunni rivals linked to the Shiite-led government stole votes in last weekend's elections. Anbar was one of 14 of the country's 18 provinces in which Iraqis chose members of ruling councils, which in turn select governors. Although there were allegations of election irregularities in many provinces, the complaints seemed more serious in Anbar, an area where most families own guns and where tribes maintain their own armed forces. Tribal groups, known as Awakening Councils, had hoped to win power in Anbar, believing they were entitled because of their contribution to routing al-Qaida..
Election officials have not released official figures from the balloting. Nevertheless, the Iraqi Islamic Party, a Sunni group that is part of the national government, said unofficial tallies showed it would retain control of the province.
"The preliminary results were indicating that the Awakening was ahead. But then a strange thing happened after the polls closed. There was a jump in favor of the Islamic Party," said Sheik Ahmed Abu Risha, leader of the tribal alliance. Abu Risha said the Awakening Councils' own surveys at polling stations showed the Islamic Party was trailing.
Salim Abdullah, a lawmaker from the Iraqi Islamic Party, dismissed the charges. "These charges are made by political groups who did not fare as well as they had hoped. They are a form of pressure designed to change the real results of the vote," he said.
The chairman the election commission, Faraj al-Haidari, said all formal complaints would be investigated. "Accusations are a normal process in Iraqi politics," al-Haidari said. "We look into all complaints in the same manner — not only in Anbar province. There were complaints in most provinces."
Anbar sheiks had complained that the Islamic Party, which dominated the previous council, had failed to improve public services in Anbar, where towns and cities were once battlegrounds between U.S. forces and Sunni insurgents.
Although final results have not been released, preliminary surveys in the Iraqi media indicate that voters snubbed religious parties widely blamed for the sectarian slaughter that nearly plunged the country into full-scale civil war. Al-Maliki had urged voters to go to the polls in large numbers, expressing hope for a turnout of 70 percent or 80 percent. However, the election commission said nationwide turnout was 51 percent, well below the figures in two national elections in 2005. Many Iraqis blamed the lower figure on a vehicle ban which made it difficult for people to reach their polling stations. Others complained that they didn't know where to vote and that their names were left off the registration rolls. Iraqis also expressed skepticism about the political process and said they believed their votes would not matter. "We gained nothing from the previous provincial council, and the promises and slogans of the new council will disappear as soon they get their posts," said Sana Mohammed, 31, of Baghdad. "Most of the candidates are part of gangs working under the cover and supervision of big, powerful parties."

Anbar province, Iraq's vast western third, was once the heartland of the Sunni Arab insurgency against U.S. troops but is now largely quiet, thanks to tribal guard units known as Awakening councils that helped drive out al-Qaeda militants. Iraqi Islamic Party (IIP) claiming the results will keep it in power, Awakening leaders alleged fraud in the voting.

The electoral commission said the election took place without major violations. According to the preliminary estimates, new parties will advance, which will make significant changes in the political map and the nature of alliances in the future, "Iraqi al-Sabah newspaperIraqis voted heavily for secular parties, in a show of disaffection with the religious parties that lead the central government as early indications. Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is himself the leader of a Shiite religious movement -- the Dawa party -- but it played down its religious background in Saturday's elections, fielding candidates as part of a State of Law Coalition, and it fared slightly better at the polls. In the last elections four years ago, the Sunni Arab minority that was the mainstay of Saddam's regime largely stayed at home as the country slid in to several years of devastating sectarian bloodshed. This blood is certainly cheap to some Hamas leaders. Wasn’t it the Deputy Chairman of the Hamas Politburo [Abu Marzook] who said during a lecture he gave in Damascus, “We lost 1500 martyrs but our strong women and our hard-working sisters gave birth to over 3500 Palestinian babies during the [Israeli] attacks,” (Asharq al-Awsat, 26 January)?Was he speaking about mothers, young men and old men who have feelings and dreams and who probably do not care about Hamas’s delusions and projects? It sounds like he was speaking about chicken production!
Approximately US $2 billion worth of damages has been caused. However the indirect looser of this war has been Hamas’s reputation as it is considered politically irresponsible, reckless and an organisation that gambles with people’s lives in compliance with impure agendas whether Iranian or non-Iranian. But who can convince the masses in our Arab world of the truth vis-à-vis the alluring speeches? Discussions on Iran and Syria’s roles, and their exploitation of the Gaza issue, which will be discussed very soon by the new US administration, and how Hamas benefited from pressuring Arab governments and on their real goals, are now clear for those who cannot be cheated by slogans and are not fooled easily.
Is humanitarianism a one-way issue?
Where is the humanitarianism of Iran, Syria and its allies that exploit the blood of Gaza’s people for their own political projects? Where is the humanitarianism in the speeches delivered by Khalid Mishal, Abu Marzook, and Abu Obeida who undervalue the blood of Gaza’s innocent children and women as long as Hamas is “fine”?
Those to invest in the Palestinian blood stock exchange this time is the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and elsewhere. The MB attempted to ride the Gaza blood wave, which it believes will help it achieve its political dream of establishing a Muslim Brotherhood state. This time, the Muslim Brotherhood was clear about some of its objectives; to destroy the existing regime and to establish the Brotherhood state on the debris. However, the Palestinian Cause, in essence is exploited through Hamas and Brotherhood discourse about liberating Palestine from the river to the sea and the solution being in the hands of Arabs and Muslims. If the Palestinian ideological goldmine remains then destruction will continue and we will have another Hamas, another Gaza, more demonstrations, more cases of one-upmanship, more turmoil, more ideological lies and more bloodsuckers until either Palestinian blood runs dry or the Iranian and the Brotherhood vampires are satisfied, unless Arabs and Muslims put their minds to use to stop the bloodshed.

Hamas exiled leader Khaled Mashaal thanked his Iranian backers, saying Teheran played a "big role" in helping the Palestinians during the IDF's Operation , in Teheran, Iran, Sunday. The "people of Gaza ... have always appreciated the political and spiritual support of the Iranian leaders and nation," state TV quoted Mashaal as saying. "Iran has definitely played a big role in the victory of the people of Gaza and is a partner in that victory," Mashaal, who lives in Syria, told Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during a meeting, according to state TV. Abu Ein also called on the Arab League to send a fact-finding mission to Gaza and uncover the reality behind the shocking information. Abu Ein said he held the current caretaker government responsible for initiating the proper legal procedures against those responsible for the crimes and anyone who gave the directives for murder or torture. Extrajudicial killing
22. Naser Muhana was sentenced to two years and five months in prison after being accused of plotting a coup against Gaza’s government. When Israeli warplanes bombed the prison in the Gaza government compound in December, he attempted to escape. Masked Hamas men caught him and shot him, sources in Gaza said.
23. Saher Silawi, from the city of Rafah City was reportedly shot and killed at a funeral procession of a Fatah member in December.
24. Hasan Hijazi, a member of the leftist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, was killed after being kidnapped by masked men in Jabaliya Refugee Camp in January. Hamas apologized after saying he was killed by mistake.
25. Ahmad Izzat Shaquara, from the city of Khan Younis, was reportedly kidnapped in January. He was shot in the feet died shortly after. There were a total of 15 separate reports of shootings in Khan Younis.
26. Ahmad Az-Za’anin, age 42, not affiliated with a political faction, was abducted from his home in the town of Beit Hanoun in January and found dead. He apparently struck in the head with a sharp object. Hamas released a statement on his death saying that the incident was a result of security chaos resulting from the Israeli onslaught.
Ma’an Exclusive – The de facto government in Gaza “categorically rejects” allegations that it carried out extrajudicial executions, physical attacks, and other human rights violations in Gaza during the Israel’s three-week offensive against the territory. Ma’an News Agency has compiled numerous of eyewitness accounts of violations by uniformed and civilian-clothed Hamas men. In the course of its investigation, Ma’an also consulted independent human rights monitors and political leaders from both Hamas and Fatah. Contacted by Ma’an, the spokesperson for the Hamas-run Interior Ministry in Gaza, Ihab Al-Ghusein rejected these reports as false but did not address the details of the report. Mentions of these incidents were made in the New York Times as early as a 29 December report that said at least five had been executed in Gaza City’s Ash-Shifa hospital by Hamas militants. The five were said to have been collaborating with Israel. At least some of the dead had escaped from a Hamas-run prison when it was bombed by Israeli warplanes, the report said.
Another report by the Israeli journalist Amira Hass, noted that those being killed extrajudicially were collaborators, petty criminals and Fatah supporters. Hass’ report in the newspaper Haaretz said that 40 to 80 people had been killed. On Thursday, a senior Fatah leader in the West Bank, Ibrahim Abu Naja told Ma’an that between four and eight Fatah members had been victims of political killings carried out by Hamas security forces. Abu Naja declined to name the victims. He also said that dozens of other Fatah members had been put under house arrest during the Israeli campaign in Gaza.
Following the unilateral ceasefires declared two weeks ago, Fatah Spokesperson Fahmi Az-Zareer confirmed the death of at least 16 Fatah-affiliates and the injury of dozens of others, several of which had been shot in the foot or leg as the fighting in the Gaza Strip began. The statement also included the names of those killed. “All of these statements are not true,” Al-Ghusein said, and he called for “anyone who was attacked to file a complaint and if they are afraid as Fatah claims I call them to come to me in person to handle the issue.” On Saturday, however, Hamas leader in exile Mousa Abu Marzouq confirmed that Hamas did execute several collaborators during Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip, and that most of these collaborators were Fatah-affiliates.
The Independent Commission on Human Rights in Gaza released a report last Monday confirming documentation of the close-range shooting of a “number” of individuals in the Gaza Strip during Israel’s war on the area. The ICHR report said the perpetrators of the shootings were often in official uniforms but sometimes masked, and “opened fire on people's legs, severely beat others, imposed house arrests, and threatened to punish citizens along with their family members if they would not comply.” The committee called for a halt to such extra-judicial violence, and also noted that they feared retaliation acts in the West Bank for the harsh treatment of Fatah members in Gaza.
The report said 20 were killed and 116 were shot in the lower limbs. At least 150 Fatah-affiliates were also put under house arrest by order of the Ministry of the Interior. According to Fatah, a number of those killed had been political prisoners, and others were taken and interrogated on suspicion of collaboration with Israel. Separately official documents from the Hamas government were obtained by Ma’an, which corroborate reports of house arrests. The documents name Fatah members and contain orders not to leave the home except for Friday prayer. If the orders are disobeyed, the papers say, cases will be handled “in the field.”
While Hamas writes to Turkey´s Prime Minister: Turkey's hospitals, and those of other sympathetic nations, were filled in a matter of weeks - weeks during which the Israeli onslaught deprived almost 1,400 families of their loved ones, maimed 5,500 innocents and demolished tens of thousands of homes.

Compensation Law’s Promise Unfulfilled as Provincial Officials Apply Unjust Criteria

A compensation process to benefit the displaced has now become a way to relieve the state of its liability. The derisory sums offered are not only unjust, but they also undermine any possibility for the villagers to rebuild their lives. Turkish security forces required villages to show their loyalty by forming platoons of “provisional village guards” that were armed, paid and supervised by the local gendarmerie post. Villagers who refused were driven from their homes by security forces. The army used helicopters, armored vehicles, troops and village guards to empty the villages.Troops burned crops, stored produce, agricultural equipment, orchards, forests, and livestock, and set fire to houses, often giving the inhabitants no opportunity to retrieve their possessions. Soldiers often abused and humiliated villagers, in some cases stole their property and cash, and ill-treated or tortured them before herding them out of the area. Scores of villagers “disappeared” or were extrajudicially executed during these counterinsurgency operations. More than 3,000 villages were virtually wiped off the map in the village destruction program.
Successive Turkish governments announced initiatives for the return of the displaced, but these were always poorly funded and lacked the political backbone necessary to inspire substantial numbers of permanent returns. Village guards are still roaming the countryside, and present a serious threat to the security of returnees. In the past three and a half years, village guards have killed at least 13 unarmed villagers, and attacked many others (see Human Rights Watch’s letter to Interior Minister Abdülkadir Aksu calling for the abolition of the village guard system). The situation of displaced people in Turkey, and the Turkish government’s poor performance in caring for their interests, is monitored by intergovernmental bodies. The United Nations special representative on internal displacement visited Turkey in May 2002 and submitted a series of recommendations to the Turkish government. In June 2004, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe recommended that the government “move from a dialogue to a formal partnership with UN agencies to work for a return in safety and dignity of those internally displaced by the conflict in the 1990s.” The 2005 European Commission Regular Report on Turkey’s progress observed that: “The situation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) remains critical, with many living in precarious conditions.”

Despite its compensation law, the Turkish government is failing to provide fair compensation for hundreds of thousands of mainly Kurdish villagers displaced by the military’s brutal counterinsurgency campaigns in the southeast, Human Rights Watch said in a briefing paper released today. Although a compensation law aimed at providing fair and appropriate redress to the displaced was adopted by the Turkish parliament in 2004, provincial assessment commissions have arbitrarily and unjustly reduced compensation amounts or denied compensation altogether to those displaced during counterinsurgency operations in the 1980s and 1990s. Human Rights Watch urged the Turkish government to suspend the commissions until their operating methods can be revised. “Turkey’s compensation law offered hope that the government would finally compensate hundreds of thousands of displaced people for their losses at the hands of the military,” said Holly Cartner, Europe and Central Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “Now these displaced villagers have been victimized yet again by the arbitrariness of a compensation process that was supposedly established to help them.”
The Law on Compensation for Damage Arising from Terror and Combating Terror (Compensation Law) of 2004 was intended to indemnify victims of the armed conflict between Turkish government forces and the Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK), which took place in southeastern Turkey from 1984 onward. Clashes continued this year, but the level of violence has fallen recently, and the PKK declared a ceasefire in September.
Victims of the longstanding conflict include the 378,335 villagers – mainly Kurdish farmers and their families – who were forcibly displaced from their homes and livelihoods in the 1990s. Payments under the Compensation Law to this group were intended to cover losses arising from the original displacement, as well as those incurred during the decade or more that families were unable to return to their property. The Turkish government stated that the intent of the law was to “to deepen trust in the state, to strengthen the state-citizen relationship, to contribute to social peace and the fight against terrorism.” The government committed itself to ensuring that the law would be effectively implemented. Initially, the law held out the promise that families would get enough compensation to allow them to return to their former homes or make a new life in the cities where they had taken up residence after being displaced. Two years later, that promise has not been fulfilled. Provincial assessment commissions travel to remote villages to evaluate families’ loss by examining the rubble of torched homes and scarce paperwork. The sums proposed by assessment commissions had never fully compensated displaced persons for the losses they had suffered. But until this year, the sums in some cases were comparable with compensation sums for displaced families ordered by the European Court for Human Rights. This all changed in January, when the court rejected the application of a Tunceli villager in Içyer v. Turkey on the grounds that the Compensation Law was an effective domestic remedy. Thereafter, the more than 1,500 cases pending before the court were dismissed on the grounds that the applicants had not exhausted the effective domestic remedy provided by the Compensation Law.
Since the European Court for Human Rights announced its decision in the İçyer case, there has been a noticeable deterioration in the implementation of the Compensation Law. Increasingly, damage assessment commissions appear to apply arbitrary and unjust criteria in calculating compensation, resulting in absurdly low compensation amounts in many cases. These calculations consistently seem to favor the government and appear to be biased against the victims of government abuse.
“A compensation process to benefit the displaced has now become a way to relieve the state of its liability,” said Cartner.” The derisory sums offered are not only unjust, but they also undermine any possibility for the villagers to rebuild their lives.” In a briefing paper submitted to the Turkish government today, Human Rights Watch listed some of the methods used to drive down compensation payments: calculating house values on the basis of values for cowsheds; underestimating the extent of landholdings; and arbitrarily excluding any payments for livestock – in a region where animal husbandry was the main industry. The Compensation Law provides no viable opportunity to appeal assessments, and the mainly Kurdish peasants have no alternative but to accept whatever is offered.

Yeah..Turkey can help the Baluchis and the Palestinians...But have just not undermine any possibility for the Kurdish villagers to rebuild their lives, but don´t give a damn. Clashes continued this year, but the level of violence has fallen recently, and the PKK declared a ceasefire in September.
Victims of the longstanding conflict include the 378,335 villagers – mainly Kurdish farmers and their families – who were forcibly displaced from their homes and livelihoods in the 1990s. Payments under the Compensation Law to this group were intended to cover losses arising from the original displacement, as well as those incurred during the decade or more that families were unable to return to their property. The Turkish government stated that the intent of the law was to “to deepen trust in the state, to strengthen the state-citizen relationship, to contribute to social peace and the fight against terrorism.” The government committed itself to ensuring that the law would be effectively implemented. Initially, the law held out the promise that families would get enough compensation to allow them to return to their former homes or make a new life in the cities where they had taken up residence after being displaced. Two years later, that promise has not been fulfilled. Provincial assessment commissions travel to remote villages to evaluate families’ loss by examining the rubble of torched homes and scarce paperwork. The sums proposed by assessment commissions had never fully compensated displaced persons for the losses they had suffered. But until this year, the sums in some cases were comparable with compensation sums for displaced families ordered by the European Court for Human Rights. This all changed in January, when the court rejected the application of a Tunceli villager in Içyer v. Turkey on the grounds that the Compensation Law was an effective domestic remedy. Thereafter, the more than 1,500 cases pending before the court were dismissed on the grounds that the applicants had not exhausted the effective domestic remedy provided by the Compensation Law.
Since the European Court for Human Rights announced its decision in the İçyer case, there has been a noticeable deterioration in the implementation of the Compensation Law. Increasingly, damage assessment commissions appear to apply arbitrary and unjust criteria in calculating compensation, resulting in absurdly low compensation amounts in many cases. These calculations consistently seem to favor the government and appear to be biased against the victims of government abuse.
“A compensation process to benefit the displaced has now become a way to relieve the state of its liability,” said Cartner.” The derisory sums offered are not only unjust, but they also undermine any possibility for the villagers to rebuild their lives.” In a briefing paper submitted to the Turkish government today, Human Rights Watch listed some of the methods used to drive down compensation payments: calculating house values on the basis of values for cowsheds; underestimating the extent of landholdings; and arbitrarily excluding any payments for livestock – in a region where animal husbandry was the main industry. The Compensation Law provides no viable opportunity to appeal assessments, and the mainly Kurdish peasants have no alternative but to accept whatever is offered.

Two soldiers and a civilian were lightly wounded by shrapnel on Sunday evening when four mortar shells fired from the Gaza Strip landed in the Sha'ar Hanegev region of the western Negev. At least one Kassam rocket landed near Sderot an hour later. Kassam narrowly misses kindergarten. The latest ceasefire violations were one of many for the day. Earlier, IDF soldiers patrolling the Gaza border near the Kissufim crossing came under fire, and before that four Kassams and a number of mortar shells were fired at the South from the Strip. Troops returned fire into Gaza, and no casualties or damage were reported in the attack.
One of the Kassam rockets landed between two kindergartens in the Eshkol region. Two others hit open areas nearby and a fourth hit the Sdot Negev region. Mashaal, along with a high-level Hamas delegation, will reportedly meet with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in an effort to garner support for his group in the Middle East. According to the report, the other five delegation members were also part of the Hamas politburo, which Mashaal heads. For three years, the world has been trying to rid themselves of Hamas, they imposed a blockade on Gaza. The time has come to talk to us," Mashaal said during a speech in Damascus. Mashaal described the recent IDF campaign in Gaza, which targeted Hamas terrorists, as the "first real war that our people have won," stressing that "Hamas and the resistance movements played an honorable role."

Military Intelligence Chief Major-General Amos Yadlin told cabinet that the rocket and mortar attacks on southern Israel were being carried out by terror groups that are not Hamas. "Hamas, for its part, has been deterred and is honoring the ceasefire, but is not deterring the others enough," he said.
The Fatah movement in Gaza denied news reports that it fired projectiles on Sunday, contradicting reports from an Israeli news agency and others. According to a statement sent to Ma’an, neither its affiliated armed wings, including the Al-Aqsa Brigades, fired projectiles toward the western Negev in Israel. “This happens all the time. Whenever a faction doesn’t claim responsibility, they are always claimed to have been fired by people affiliated with us,” the statement said. The Fatah movement in Gaza also rejected “fabricated” reports that its movement fired projectiles toward Israel. The movement added that its priority is to stop assaults through stabilizing the ceasefire and an agreement on a comprehensive and simultaneous truce, affirming its rejection of any act outside of the national consensus.

Ma’an – Al-Quds University will cease all forms of academic cooperation with Israeli academic institutions soon, the school’s board determined on Sunday. “In cooperation with all sides and under an accepted timetable,” the university will phase out programs and cooperation, the university board said in a statement. It added that, “If the two-state solution is as far away today as it was ten years ago, there is no justification for continued academic cooperation based on reaching that solution.” “And there is no justification for continued official and non-official cooperation in other fields, foremost security coordination between the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Israel,” the board noted. “Ending academic cooperation is aimed at, first of all, pressuring Israel to abide by a solution that ends the occupation, a solution that has been needed for far too long and that the international community has stopped demanding,” the board said. It also noted that the decision came “in response to the prior Israeli onslaught [on Gaza]; the acts and policies of Israeli governments over the past ten years, including settlement construction in East Jerusalem, the tightening of the siege on the occupied territories and thwarting any negotiated peace process that will lead to an independent Palestinian state living in peace alongside Israel.” It also affirmed the necessity for all those involved, including government organizations, civil society groups, domestic and international, to focus on a just and prompt solution for the Palestinian cause. The statement insisted that all parties involved press for a solution according to “international legitimacy and Arab and international efforts.” The board called for the international community to pressure the Israeli government to comply with international legitimacy and call for taking legal and political action for Israel’s “dangerous crimes and violations in Gaza,” as well as Israel’s “illegal acts in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.” Finally, the university board expressed disappointment over the absence of serious protest from Israeli academia, in particular, and civil society organizations, in general, as well as the failure of these organizations to “understand the injustice that Palestinians are suffering from,” calling on local, international and regional academics to support the university’s stance by halting academic cooperation with Israeli institutions.

According to a statement sent to Ma’an, neither its affiliated armed wings, including the Al-Aqsa Brigades, fired projectiles toward the western Negev in Israel. “This happens all the time. Whenever a faction doesn’t claim responsibility, they are always claimed to have been fired by people affiliated with us,” the statement said. The Fatah movement in Gaza also rejected “fabricated” reports that its movement fired projectiles toward Israel. The movement added that its priority is to stop assaults through stabilizing the ceasefire and an agreement on a comprehensive and simultaneous truce, affirming its rejection of any act outside of the national consensus.

Ma’an – Al-Quds University will cease all forms of academic cooperation with Israeli academic institutions soon, the school’s board determined on Sunday. “In cooperation with all sides and under an accepted timetable,” the university will phase out programs and cooperation, the university board said in a statement. It added that, “If the two-state solution is as far away today as it was ten years ago, there is no justification for continued academic cooperation based on reaching that solution.” “And there is no justification for continued official and non-official cooperation in other fields, foremost security coordination between the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Israel,” the board noted. “Ending academic cooperation is aimed at, first of all, pressuring Israel to abide by a solution that ends the occupation, a solution that has been needed for far too long and that the international community has stopped demanding,” the board said. It also noted that the decision came “in response to the prior Israeli onslaught [on Gaza]; the acts and policies of Israeli governments over the past ten years, including settlement construction in East Jerusalem, the tightening of the siege on the occupied territories and thwarting any negotiated peace process that will lead to an independent Palestinian state living in peace alongside Israel.” It also affirmed the necessity for all those involved, including government organizations, civil society groups, domestic and international, to focus on a just and prompt solution for the Palestinian cause. The statement insisted that all parties involved press for a solution according to “international legitimacy and Arab and international efforts.” The board called for the international community to pressure the Israeli government to comply with international legitimacy and call for taking legal and political action for Israel’s “dangerous crimes and violations in Gaza,” as well as Israel’s “illegal acts in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.” Finally, the university board expressed disappointment over the absence of serious protest from Israeli academia, in particular, and civil society organizations, in general, as well as the failure of these organizations to “understand the injustice that Palestinians are suffering from,” calling on local, international and regional academics to support the university’s stance by halting academic cooperation with Israeli institutions.
