Serry said that while an immediate cessation of hostilities was "absolutely vital," new conditions must be created on the ground to prevent a repeat of the conflict, and a return to the status quo ante would not be enough. So.. miscalculations..And crimes against humanity.
While they sits and calculate in Syria how Hamas will win popularity by sacrificed and the death of Palestinians and children in Gaza..It´s a disaster there! And we talking DISASTER..The Gazan´s had it going with exporting some to Europe like flower exports and other business going. And then Annapolis came..With Syria´s alternative "peace conferences" and the most psychopathic manipulations and disgusting use of other people Syria have showed up..In the "resistance against the U.S. plans for the Middle East"..With demonstrations in Syria inciting violence in the Gaza strip, using the division among the Palestinians they have created, the part of right of return that Syria added to have demonstrations to undermining Abbas and the Palestinian authority in every possible way.

UN chief wants monitors to enforce Gaza cease-fire
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is urging key world leaders to intensify efforts to achieve an immediate Israeli-Hamas cease-fire.
29 December 2008 - Secretary-General's statement on continued escalation in and around Gaza. I am deeply alarmed by the current escalation of violence in and around Gaza. This is unacceptable. I have been repeatedly condemning the rocket attacks by Hamas militants against Israel. While recognizing Israel's right to defend itself, I have also condemned the excessive use of force by Israel in Gaza. The suffering caused to civilian populations as a result of the large-scale violence and destruction that have taken place over the past few days has saddened me profoundly. All this must stop. Both Israel and Hamas must halt their acts of violence and take all necessary measures to avoid civilian casualties. A ceasefire must be declared immediately. World leaders must also step up efforts to support a longer term resolution of the issue. During the past few days, I have spoken to the principals of the Quartet, to regional leaders and to a number of other leaders, in order to underscore the need to restore calm in full. I shall continue these efforts personally as well as through my envoys in the field. I reiterate my call that unhindered access should be ensured for the delivery of humanitarian assistance. The United Nations, through the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process [UNSCO], United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East [UNRWA] and other agencies on the ground have been in continuous contact with all relevant authorities and mobilizing themselves to provide much needed assistance and alleviate civilian suffering.
I expect all parties to fully heed my call. Israel must keep opening all border crossings necessary for the continued provision of humanitarian supplies. Israeli Government leaders have given me a guarantee that such supplies and personnel would be allowed entry into Gaza. This cooperation must continue on a rolling basis in the coming days.
Speaking to reporters in the White House after a meeting with President George W. Bush, Rice also said that the United States remains "very concerned about the situation there and is working very hard with our partners around the world." Rice also charged that Hamas "has used Gaza as a launching pad" for firing rockets into the Jewish state and that, as a result, the Palestinians living in Gaza have had "a very bad daily life." "It's obvious that a cease-fire should take place as soon as possible but we want a cease-fire that is durable and sustainable." The secretary said the United States has been in "constant contact" with all the parties in the region and with leaders of other nations and organizations to try to bring an end to the violence. She said she is looking for a solution "that will be a sustainable" for Israel, the people of Gaza and of the Middle East.
US President George W. Bush on Friday branded the Hamas rocket attacks on Israel. "Promises from Hamas will not suffice - there must be monitoring mechanisms in place to help ensure that smuggling of weapons into Gaza comes to an end."
Bush also expressed deep concern about the humanitarian suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza, and blamed Hamas for the situation. "By spending its resources on rocket launchers instead of roads and schools, Hamas has demonstrated that it has no intention of serving the Palestinian people," Bush said. "America has helped by providing tens of millions of dollars in humanitarian aid, and this week we contributed an additional $85 million through the United Nations. We have consistently called on all in the region to ensure that assistance reaches those in need." The White House has cautiously said Israel must be mindful of the toll its military strikes will have on civilians. In their waning days in power, Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice have been working the phones with world allies to try organize a truce.
Economic Minister Naser As-Saraj said that crossings would be opened on Sunday to allow 80 truckloads into the strip, 45 with humanitarian aid and 35 others for the private sector.

SYDNEY (Reuters) – Anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd said it has been forced to temporarily abandon its pursuit of Japan's whaling fleet in the Antarctic while its ship refuels. Paul Watson, the founder of the U.S. based group, said in a statement posted on the group's website (www.seashepherd.org) its ship the Steve Irwin would refuel at the nearest available port and then return to the pursuit. He said the two-week operation in the Southern Ocean had been a success as the number of whales killed by the Japanese had fallen.
Japan's whaling fleet is in the Antarctic for an annual hunt to capture 900 whales. Despite an international moratorium on whaling since 1986, Japan justifies the hunt on the grounds this whaling is for "scientific" purposes. Much of the meat ends up on supermarket shelves and dinner tables. "We have engaged them, we have stopped their whaling activities for two weeks and we have successfully chased them out of the Australian Antarctic territorial waters," Watson said in the statement Friday. "We now have to return to land to refuel. We don't have the luxury of refueling at sea like the Japanese fleet has."Sea Shepherd said that it had pursued the Japanese fleet for two weeks and driven it out of waters Australia claims around its Antarctic territory. The Japanese say they are in international waters. Japan's Institute of Cetacean Research, which runs the annual hunt, has accused Sea Shepherd of "eco-terrorism," and of ramming and endangering Japanese vessels, allegations Watson rejects.
