SL military conceals mass graves at Vara’ni in Thenmaraadchi

 TamilNet, 21 April 2014, The occupying Sri Lankan military relocating its 522 Brigade Headquarters, which was the artillery and command base at the Northern front during the war, has been removing the skeletons including the sand from an alleged mass grave site at the locality of the old base in recent weeks, reliable sources in Thenmaraadchi told TamilNet on Monday. 

 After removing all the traces, the bunkers have been filled with sand brought from elsewhere. Despite the claim that it had moved the camp to a new locality, at Aasaippi’l’lai-yeattam at Mirusuvil, the SL military was present at the old site for several weeks to ensure that all traces have been removed, the sources further said.

The notorius Vara'ni camp was situated at Point Pedro – Kodikaamam Road since 1996 when Jaffna peninsula was captured by the genocidal military of Sri Lanka.

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- PLO and Hamas representatives announced an historic unity deal on Wednesday to bring to an end more than seven years of political division between the main Palestinian political parties. Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh announced the end of years of Palestinian political division in a press conference in Gaza City, saying that the Hamas and PLO delegations had worked as "one team" throughout the reconciliation dialogue and had stressed the necessity of achieving results in this round of dialogue. 

 The joint PLO-Hamas statement given at the conference also authorized the Palestinian Authority president to set a date for new elections, and emphasized the commitment of both sides to the reconciliation principles that had been agreed upon in the Cairo Agreement and the Doha Declaration.

They also emphasized the need to reactivate the Palestinian Legislative Council.

Earlier, Palestinian officials announced that they had agreed to form a unity government within five weeks that will be headed by either President Mahmoud Abbas or former Deputy Prime Minister of the 2006 unity government Nasser al-Din al-Shaer, who is a member of Hamas.

 The parties also agreed that both Hamas in Gaza and Fatah in the occupied West Bank would release prisoners detained for their political affiliation.

 The division between the two Palestinian factions began in 2006, when Hamas won the Palestinian legislative elections.

In the following year, clashes erupted between Fatah and Hamas, leaving Hamas in control of the Strip and Fatah in control of parts of the occupied West Bank.

 The groups have made failed attempts at national reconciliation for years, most recently in 2012, when they signed two agreements -- one in Cairo and a subsequent one in Doha -- which have as of yet been entirely unimplemented.

 Fatah leader Azzam al-Ahmad said that neither side will accept the resumption of negotiations with Israel without clear guidelines, and that negotiations had stalled as a result of "Israel intransigence" and "American bias."

BRITISH MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT CALLS FOR FREEDOM OF ÖCALAN

ANF - London 07.04.2014, Many MPs, Lords and representatives of civil society organisations in Britain have signed a petition calling for the release of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan. On Öcalan’s 65th birthday, and 15 years after his abduction, some of those who signed the petition spoke to ANF, recalling the words of Nelson Mandela: "only free men can negotiate".

 Member of the House of Lords, Raymond Hylton, stressed that Öcalan had been unable to see his lawyers for two and a half years, yet despite this peace talks had continued. Hylton said that in order for Öcalan to make a contribution to peace in the Kurdish region he must be released immediately, adding: "remember Mandela".

 MP John McDonnell said that if the Turkish government wished for lasting peace with the Kurdish people it should end its illegal detention of Mr Öcalan. McDonnell added that only Öcalan could bring about a lasting peace.

 Öcalan's freedom is crucial

 International human rights lawyer Margaret Owen said she saw Öcalan as a man of peace, adding that in visits she had made to North Kurdistan, South Kurdistan and Rojava she had observed that Öcalan was seen as a real leader. Owen recalled Mandela’s words, "only free men can negotiate; prisoners cannot enter into contracts" saying Öcalan should be released immediately.

UN decries dire Gaza conditions, calls for action

World Bulletin / News Desk - James W. Rawley, the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, has described humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip as among the most difficult in the world. At a Monday press conference near the Israel-Gaza Karni border crossing – closed by Israel for the last ten years – Rawley said Gaza's humanitarian situation continued to worsen despite ongoing Palestinian-Israeli peace talks.

 At the conference, held to commemorate the launch of a 2013 report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Rawley asserted that Israel's eight-year-old blockade of the Gaza Strip was hindering development in the Palestinian enclave and hurting the coastal strip's economy.  Rawley called for allowing construction materials into the territory and allowing farmers and fishermen to access their places of work. 

 He said Gaza has the right to have access to clean drinking water – through the desalination of seawater – and electric power. The U.N. official called on Egyptian authorities to help alleviate the suffering of the strip's inhabitants by allowing individuals, consumer goods and medical supplies into Gaza via the Rafah border crossing.

The World calls on Israel to immediately end the siege on Gaza and have done so for a long time now!




UN official calls for Israel to lift siege of Gaza. UN's Coordinator of Humanitarian Affairs in the Palestinian Territories James Rowley has called for Israel to lift the siege imposed on the Gaza Strip and to reopen the closed legal crossings.

 In a press conference held at the UNRWA headquarters in Gaza, Rowley said that although 2013 was the "quietest" year in recent history on the Gaza-Israeli front, the Palestinians in Gaza have witnessed their worst life situation in decades. 

 Rowley also called upon Egypt to open the Rafah Crossing for passengers, goods and necessary medical supplies. He suggested for the crossing to at least function as it did before July 2013. 

 To help improve the life of the 1.9 million Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territories, Rowley called upon the international community to give $390 million in aid. 

 Regarding the fishermen in Gaza, the UN official called for allowing them to sail freely in the sea and for the farmers to move freely on their farms adjacent or close to the Palestinian-Israeli border.

 During the same press conference, a representative of the World Food Programme spoke about the dangerous situation of food security in the Strip. He noted that food insecurity in Gaza has increased from 48 per cent to 57 per cent. He stressed that the international community must continue helping the residents of the Gaza Strip in order to meet the huge need for food.
